Make.conf es el archivo principal de Portage, ya que contiene muchas variables. Por ejemplo, los más conocidos: CFLAGS,CHOST,CXXFLAGS,USE, INPUT_DEVICES, VIDEO_CARDS,LINGUAS,GENTOO_MIRRORS. Hay además variables opcionales adicionales como PORTDIR_OVERLAY. En esta distribución de Linux, el usuario compila el código fuente localmente de acuerdo a las configuraciones elegidas en orden para mejorar su sistema y también para aprender más acerca de Linux.
