|history_linux=Brant Gurganus started in Linux in college. One of his college classmates pointed him initially toward [http://debian.org/ Debian]. However, Debian did not provide the support for his laptop's hardware, at least not in its stable form. Brant then went on to try [http://fedoraproject.org/ Fedora]. Fedora was just getting started and wasn't very polished. Its graphical tools also covered over the actual modification of configuration files which Brant wanted to learn. Next, Brant tried [http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ Linux from Scratch]. Linux from Scratch was a very educational experience. However, it had one major drawback: there was no package management. At this point, Brant was pointed to the [http://www.gentoo.org/ Gentoo Linux project]. Gentoo gave the educational experience of Linux from Scratch alongside the convenience of its [http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/portage/ Portage package manager]. In the summer of 2005, Brant worked for [http://www.microsoft.com/en/us/ Microsoft] in an internship. At the same time, Daniel Robbins, the founder of the Gentoo Linux project, started working at Microsoft as well. Brant sent a message to Daniel asking to meet over lunch one day, and the two have been friends ever since. Brant got involved with Daniel's [http://www.funtoo.org/ Funtoo] project late in 2010.
