History using Linux
Brant Gurganus started in Linux in college. One of his college classmates pointed him initially toward Debian. However, Debian did not provide the support for his laptop's hardware, at least not in its stable form. Brant then went on to try Fedora. Fedora was just getting started and wasn't very polished. Its graphical tools also covered over the actual modification of configuration files which Brant wanted to learn. Next, Brant tried Linux from Scratch. Linux from Scratch was a very educational experience. However, it had one major drawback: there was no package management. At this point, Brant was pointed to the Gentoo Linux project. Gentoo gave the educational experience of Linux from Scratch alongside the convenience of its Portage package manager. In the summer of 2005, Brant worked for Microsoft in an internship. At the same time, Daniel Robbins, the founder of the Gentoo Linux project, started working at Microsoft as well. Brant sent a message to Daniel asking to meet over lunch one day, and the two have been friends ever since. Brant got involved with Daniel's Funtoo project late in 2010.
