It is about the installation of gnome-fallback.(You can try it if you don't like gnome-shell).You can do it after installing the base system.

install X
# emerge -a xorg-server

configure the X, create the file: xorg.conf.new

# X -config /root/xorg.conf.new

If needed, edit the xorg.conf.new; after that, copy to the /etc/X11

# cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

You can read the gentoo X wiki [1]

install gnome-fallback

gnome-session is also needed.

# emerge gnome-session gnome-fallback
post-install configuration

If you use startx to start gnome, you should edit the ~/.xinitrc

$ cat > $HOME/.xinitrc << EOF
export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome-
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
EOF

add dbus to default service

# rc-update add dbus default

# /etc/init.d/dbus start

At last, run the startx cmd to start the gnome in fallback mode

startx

Just enjoy the gnome-fallback!
