When using Xorg-server-1.7 with hal, there is no need to have a xorg.conf. Is there some kind of hal2xorg utility?

Sadly, there is no fdi2xorgconf converters. You could use xorg without xorg.conf even with <=1.7 also. xorg.conf.d dir with small configs is almost like hal's fdi files.
