Gentoo Linux は、（バイナリパッケージではなく）ソースコードから構築する Linux ディストリビューションで、 Daniel Robbins が創りました。Gentoo Linux の公式なパッケージ管理システムはPortage で、もともとの設計仕様は FreeBSD の ports システムを参考にしています。 Portage の主要なユーティリティは Emerge で、 Python で書かれており、パッケージのインストールやアンインストールに用います。
