Welcome! Funtoo Linux (distrowatch) is a community-developed Linux meta-distribution and evolution of Gentoo Linux. Funtoo Linux is optimized for the best possible performance on the latest Intel and AMD hardware. Funtoo is led by Daniel Robbins, the creator of Gentoo Linux, and actively developed by the Funtoo community. Install / Download / FAQ

Funtoo is similar to Gentoo, but take heed -- it is also different! Here are important differences in Funtoo compared to Gentoo. And we'll explain the most important difference which is the different approach to community, but first some distinct technical differences (and if you are new to Funtoo and don't understand some of what this means, it's OK):

  • In general, while the install is still 'by hand' rather than via installer, effort has gone into making the install easier.
  • Funtoo stage3 images come with a pre-built debian-sources kernel and initramfs that supports all modern hardware. This is done to make installation easier and give all users a common reference kernel to use to start out. You don't have to build your own kernel to install Funtoo.
  • We build stage3's that include desktop environments, such as a GNOME stage3, Cinnamon stage3, and others.
  • We strongly encourage users to have an empty /etc/make.conf file! You will use ego profile to set your subarch, optimization settings, and USE settings.
  • We strongly encourage you to use our official profile settings for your desktop environment, so we can all work together to make a specific desktop setup work really, really well and benefit from each other's improvements and bug fixes.
  • Funtoo has some things that are officially supported, and some things that are not. We are a smaller project. As the community grows, you can help us to support more things!
  • We have a special technology called 'metatools that we use to automate the creation of ebuilds and keep them up-to-date.

When you use Funtoo, you are not on your own, but are part of a friendly community that is also committed to making Funtoo better. If you fix an issue you are experiencing, you are also fixing it for everyone else. This is why we try to foster a 'wolf pack' philosophy -- we are all in this journey together. If we use similar system configurations, we can continue and refine the Funtoo experience, and make it better for all. So don't be a hermit -- be part of the wolf pack, and help us to make our official stages better, and help us to add more official stages to the matrix of things we support!

If you use Funtoo Linux, you are welcome to contribute to its development via code.funtoo.org without going through any special procedure or complicated approval process. See Development Guide for more information on how to contribute to Funtoo. We also have YouTube video tutorials to help you get started. A key part of the Funtoo mission is supporting Funtoo users and assisting them in becoming productive and happy contributors to the project.
